2/14 [MO], 2017 - Hero's Journey

DUE TUESDAY:  
CASTLE READING PACKET #1 (show reading)

I.  HERO'S JOURNEY warm up
- unscramble order of events from Disney's The Lion King
- number 1-12; read silently first, then share in groups
- on back of sheet try to list out the categories of events in every Hero's Journey
   use events from Lion King, as each represents a stage in the Hero's Journey
- now try to figure out what events in the Giver fit the hero's journey
- write plot event in parentheses on the back of your sheet

II.  HERO'S JOURNEY - memorizing/sharing a stage description
- everyone gets a slip of paper with a part of one of the first four stages
  title of stage and brief description
- read silently
- box the category of the stage and the number of that stage
- read several times and then underline up to 5 key words you'd have to use
  in a paraphrasing or retelling of your explanation
- choral reading; everyone reads aloud at once; conversational tone; sound out words
  keep repeating/looping; get better at saying words and flowing sentences each time

- move about room and share with other students; switch strips of paper;
- oldest person speaks first
- summarize your strip of paper; listener takes note of your highlighted words
- listener always paraphrases what they just heard, or mentions something they just heard
- write the name of each student you share with on the back of your strip (YOU write, not them)
-  using numbers on each strip of paper, find new table group seating
- using strips of paper, now  identify first four stages in Lion King
   and guess plot events from the Giver that fit the first four stages of Hero's Journey

HOMEWORK - focus on background, parts, & design of a model castle

___  using Castle Reading Packet #1 create a list of potential vocabulary words
        begin 20 CASTLE WORDS VOCAB #1 due Friday (using packet)
        (a) word; (b) definition/explanation/description; (c) visual for A+
         * the packet gives many visuals, but you can also look up parts/words online

___  brainstorm CASTLE PROJECT QUESTIONS to ask (due TUES)
        * be prepared to list questions that should be answered in your instruction packet
        * this is a quiz (you may use your brainstorm list for the quiz)
