9/1/15 - TU [LEGACY OF ancient ROMAN EMPIRE]

I.  SPIRAL FORMATTING
- briefly touch on page numbers, dates, titles, leaving the right margin (outside margin) of each page
  alone

* same rules apply to the LA spiral

II.  WHY WE STUDY HISTORY
- discuss in groups (why are we studying 2000 years of history?  What's the point?)
- One-page QW in Social Studies spiral
- Teacher-led notes from a web-survey on back side of page (page 2 of spiral)

III.  HISTORY ALIVE TEXTBOOK (intro)
- preview Chapter 1 (look at how the chapters is designed)
-  Take note of titles, sub titles, key words, maps, charts, tables, images
- How do you find important information in a text quickly? 
- create FRAME with main ideas and details
- main ideas would be these elements:  titles, subtitles, vocabulary, images
- details would be the actual titles, subtitles, vocab, etc.
* SKIMMING AND SCANNING ACTIVITY
* without reading the chapter, you should already know some facts
    about the Legacy of the Roman Empire
