I. HISTORICAL FIGURE BOOK CHOICE (for Mini Illustrated Booklet)
- look at an assortment of books on historical figures related to our curriulum
- peruse cover, title, images, back cover, inside front cover, table of contents,
- browse random chapters to see if it is at your level or feels interesting
- after moving about from table to table, choose a book to check out
* this book is now your assigned home reading book
* read at least 20-30 minutes per day, Mon-Thursday, with catch up or extra reading over wknds
* don't dawdle!
* you want to be prepared to start writing your MiB next week
II. FAMILY TREE (in class novel)
- front cover analysis (what do we observe? Details like a detective)
-make a prediction about the plot, characters, conflict of this story based on cover observations
- Teacher-led notes from a web-survey on back side of page (page 2 of spiral)
* take not of use of words by author, how certain words convey tone and meaning
* take note of words and metaphors (monster spider, spiderweb) that convey
