WELCOME BACK!!!
* Sorry, I have to have a sub for the first three days back due to family needs
10-15 minutes
I. DISCUSS HIGHLIGHTS OF SPRING BREAK
(basically, this is a prep for the "I Am" Spring Break Poem
20-30 minutes
II. read INSTRUCTIONS FOR "I AM" poem (be prepared to adjust format)
* you can see the poems that Ms. Straub posted on the bulletin board
* check them out during break/passing
(they are I AM FROM poems, however; slightly different, but same idea)
now, share/talk about your spring break AGAIN (new people/shift tables)
- TRANSLATE/verbalize what you just shared with friends into "I..." statements
I wondered..., I heard..., I saw..., I wanted...
BE DETAILED !!!
EXAMPLE: Instead of
"I saw sea lions" you would say
"I saw a gazillion sea lions all barking and pushing and shoving
on a dock in Seaside. (They were LOUD)
rest of class
III. begin LITERARY CHARACTER "I AM" poem(s)
A. - grab a copy of S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders (for reference)
- USE next available Left-Right Pages
- begin one Outsiders CHARACTER "I AM" Poem (rough draft)
- USE your spiral notes and the text chapters 1-4 ONLY
- quick rough draft; every line should give a specific, vivid, detailed image in the mind
- finish IN class (30 minutes) -- it's a rough draft, be fast, furious, don't waste time
it will NOT be perfect, but you did just chat about your break with people,
so you should have ideas on how to phrase your lines
- Goal is TWO rough draft POEMS each on a different characters:
Ponyboy, Darry, Cherry, Sodapop, Johnny or Dallas
Show that you understand the characters AND you can pull details from the novel
last 20 minutes or so of class
B. Go back and revise -- CHECK SPELLING, ADD DETAILS to various lines
Add details that specify how much, or where, or what color, or why, or when, etc.
* IF you have to use two lines for an item, indent the second line as you would a paragraph in
prose writing (books or essay)
