Q
is
for QUEEN DOWAGER (dow-uj-er), which Elenaor of Aquitane would
eventually become when her husband, the English King Henry, died in July
of 1189. Dowager is a term or title used to indicate a woman who holds
her position through her deceased husband. Essentially she is a widow, BUT, she has a title or elevated position due to the social status of her husband. A "queen dowager" or "dowager
queen" would rule the kingdom now that her husband has died. A "queen
mother" is a dowager queen (widow) who is the mother of the current
ruling monarch of the country or nation. If a queen rules in her own
right and did not inherit the throne from her husband, then she is
referred to as a "queen REGNANT." Typically, a queen regnant has and
exercises (uses) all the sovereign (total) powers of a king and is the
guardian of a child monarch who is not yet old enough to rule.
When
her son Richard (the Lionhearted) went on the Third Crusade, Eleanor,
as Queen dowager, acted as "regent" (a person appointed to
administer/run a nation/state because the ruler is a minor or is absent
or is incapacitated). As regent, Elenaor ruled in Richard's place until
his return.
