GIVER QUESTIONS

-->
GIVER  CH 1-23  QUESTIONS
Some of these questions WILL be part or all of a Giver Final Writing Test.

This is a timed activity.  Your score is based on working during that time -- writing, drafting, using your spiral as a resource.   No one should finish ALL questions, as there are too many.

You will choose what non-opinion questions to answer (ones you feel you know best, can best answer).  They may be written in any order.  Non opinion questions are in italics - 1,2 14,16.

Other questions that use "think" or "feel" but are not in italics have factual reasoning behind the answers.

When given the opportunity, review your spiral carefully for information that will help write about or discuss the question.

Before the test, we will share with and listen deeply in conversations about the following questions:

 1.     What was your favorite part of the novel?  Explain.

 2.    Who was your favorite character in this novel?  Why?  Explain.

 3.    What is Jonas like at the beginning of the novel and how is he different or
changed by the end of the novel?  What causes him to change?

 4.    What is the Community like?  Describe it.

 5.    Why are Jonas’ mother and father never referred to by their names?

 6.    Describe Lily.   What happens every time Lily comes up with some crazy or
wild  idea?  Explain how all citizens are like Lily.

 7.    How is Gabriel’s name significant and how does it fit his character in the novel?

 8.    Describe Plato’s Allegory of the Cave.  How does this allegory (story)
connect to the Community in the Giver and Jonas’ experiences?

          Use examples.

11.    Describe who Asher is and how he is a better citizen than Jonas.

13.   How does the novel end?  Why is the author purposely vague about Jonas’ fate?

14.    Other than the euthanasia where Jonas learns the truth about what “release”
means, what was, for you, the most shocking reveal in the novel?

15.   How does the author’s writing style change from beginning to end of the novel?
Explain why the author’s writing style shifts.

16.    If you were a 12 in this Community, what assignment do you think you’d
receive?  Explain why you think this.

17.    Why do you think there are no animals in this community?  What is the reason
they would become make-believe creatures of fantasy?
