CASTLE SCORE GUIDE - CHECKLIST

PARTS OF A CASTLE CHECKLIST (SCORE GUIDE)


___            OUTER CURTAIN*  (up to 5 points, based on neatness, authenticity)

___            Crennelations* & Merlons* on top of castle walls/parapets  (5 points)
                 Tops of walls are called “battlements” if they have these defensive features

___            FINIALS, slender pieces of stone or wood on tops of   (3-5 points, depending on how many & creativity)
                  can be shaped like spikes, fins, animal shapes, globes, or anything, really

___            BARBICAN or main GATEHOUSE* structure (like every item, worth up to 5 points based on detail/authenticity)

___            PORTCULLIS* (5 points)

___            DRAWBRIDGE* (5 points)

___            KEEP* or DON JON (5 points, based on authenticity, design, details added) 

___            TURRETS or GUARD TOWERS at some or each corner  (5 points total)
                 towers rise up from the ground, while turrets stick out from the wall at the top of the parapet

___            PARAPET – knee or waist-high wall around top of castle walls   (5 points)             
                 basically, if you have a wall and there are crenels & merlons, we assume you have a parapet

___            WELL/WATER  SOURCE*  (5 points)

___            Narrow Arrow slits* down low (5 points)

___            Larger window structures higher up (5 points)

___            GARDEROBE or indication of where one or more would be.  (3-5 points)

___            CHAPEL* or indications of where a chapel would be (up to 5 points, depending on creativity)

                 Gargoyles were often decorative gutter features

___           DOVECOTE - pigeon’s shed or tower       (3-5, depending on authenticity)

___            OUTSIDE CASTLE DETAILS such as fields, buildings, & such  (up to 5 points)

___            Identification BANNERS* or FLAGS (10 points for how well it identifies creator & also for creativity)

___            INNER COURTYARD WALL – extra wall NOT required; might make the castle too big (3-5 points)

___            NEATNESS   (10 points)

___            ORGANIZATION, including having the MAJOR PARTS* at a minimum  (10 points)

___            STRUCTURAL STABILITY – how well does it hold together? (10 points)

___            other buildings/parts  not mentioned  (2 points each up to 6 points)

___            CREATIVE EMBELLISHMENT & ATTENTION TO DETAIL – (up to 20 points)

1-50 = F                 51-85 = D                 86-100 = C               101-130 = B              131-149 = A               150–plus = A++
