1/31 [TU], ISLAM expository

I.  ICON BOOK TALK CHECK IN
- briefly touch on / review the images used in the teacher example Icon Book Talk
- Students will review/share some ideas of their own with the story so far
- create check list of literary elements in tracker
* actual instructions to be handed out by Thursday, but students will know the expectations
   by the time it is handed out

II.  ISLAM expository essay (PRE-writing activities)
- in class, on demand
- review what we know and have learned (notes/group discussion)
- what are points/facts that you'd have to include in your essay? (how do we guide our writing?)
- using text, spiral notes, and frames, create a word list (30-60)
   that would have to be used in your essay, arranged sort of in order to be used
- words you could turn into sentences
- branch off words that would lead to lists/details

-  lightly box groups of words that would form separate paragraphs;
    label paragraphs (intro, conclusion, P1, etc.)  -- give some thought
     to paragraph structure before writing

* this winds up being a quick, pre-draft/brainstorm organizational tool for writing an essay

III.  ISLAM expository essay
- guided rough draft
- teacher prompted introduction -- do not just dive into subject; explain definition and an overview
   of what you'll be talking about; why is this an important topic?

- minimum one page goal
- maximum two pages
- margins on both sides and on bottom for notes; may skip lines between paragraphs
- when finished reread your words In your head to "hear" how it sounds; does it flow?
   are there gaps? recognize sentences that might need to be reworked or rewritten;
-  review for words you THINK might need to be check (SP?)
- go back and find words or comments that NEED to be defined or given explanatory details
   pick at least three
* these are initial revision steps
