11/17/16 - VIKINGS

I.  VIKINGS - review
-  review essential questions we wrote in spiral
-  quietly and in groups, discuss questions
-  what do we now know and what do we still not know?
* further research should be informed by this; as you take notes focus on what you still don't know
-  review notes & write a question in the left or write that the word answers
   (for example "WHO" next to notes about Vikings being agrarian and farmers, not just warriors)

II.  VIKINGS - DVD NOTES
- finish Dark Ages DVD
- key word list

III.  VIKINGS IN A NUTSHELL

-->
The Vikings – In A nutshell (2:00)
two minute quick overview.  Sort of cute visuals.

- define the idiom "In a nutshell"
- video notes in SS Spiral on this video
* what do we learn that is new?  what have we already heard?

IV.  BBC's HORRIBLE HISTORIES: VIKINGS "Literally" song
* what factual information can we get from a parody/song about Vikings?

-->
Just the lyrics
Watch once w/o comment; watch second time taking note of facts used
Now the Video:
Fun, irreverant and factual song about Viking conquest

- note factual information we know
- note new information we did not know
- note figurative use of language -- play on words, puns, multiple meanings

V.  VIKINGS EXPOSITORY ESSAY
- create a word list from notes
- words you know you'd have to use in your essay
- one page, maximum (that's it. no more)
- write word list on left hand side of SS Spiral
- use words as a skeletal outline of essay, write on right hand side
* on demand, rough draft only, timed -- when we are done we are done
* accept that you don't have enough room for everything
* accept that you won't be able to say everything (be selective)
