10/18 [TU], 2016 - CHARLEMAGNE

I.  questions about CHARLEMAGNE
--  "Father of Europe" and "Greatest King of Middle Ages"
- questioning activity/brainstorming
- students write in spiral all questions to ask about a famous person
- what questions does a writer have to answer in a report or encyclopedia article or documentary?
* asking questions first helps guide note-taking/paying attention to specific information
* questions can be one word long; questions should often lead to more questions

- brainstorm your own questions; then share with others in class (left side of SS spiral)
- right side of SS Spiral copy teacher provided questions; circle questions you asked on left side
(compare to see how many questions you came up with that teacher also came up with)
* all teacher questions are from encyclopedia article

II.  WORLD BOOK ENCYCLOPEDIA ARTICLE: "CHARLEMAGNE"
- read and take Cornell- Style notes
- questions or categories in smaller/thinner left side column of page
- answers or notes on right hand side
- no full sentences
- phrases or words or lists

III.  Dark Ages DVD: "The Greatest King"
- key word list
- continuing to look at each section as if it is (and it is) an essay
- note openings/introductions, transitions, set ups, details
