10/17 [MO], 2016 - Scary Vocab 1 / Mystery Book ABC words

I.  SCARY VOCAB #1 (20 Words due FR)

- prequiz & self-correct from hand out in class
- all words from Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven"
   which we will read/watch next week
- spend time looking up words

(a) correct word; (b) look up words in dictionary;
(c) definition w/ higher score for longer, more detailed background definition
      include history or etymology of word for higher credit
(d) visual or image that represents definition
      be creative (you have to explain it), OR look up word online & look at images
(e) write an original sentence using word OR look up sentences that use the word
      to help get a sense of grammar and syntax/how a word is used

* 20 words, definitions, images, and sentences due FRIDAY
    neat, organized
    cannot be typed or cut and pasted; must be hand written (better learning)


II.  MYSTERY BOOK sharing
- discuss book so far with partners
- consider character (protagonist/antagonist/suspects/supporting characters0
   character description
   internal/external motivations
- major plot events
- major clues
- any red herrings/distractions
- setting
- themes/major ideas
- tone/mood

III.  MYSTERY BOOK ABC WORD LIST
- brainstorm words for every letter of the alphabet
- look up words starting with letters that are hard to come up with words
- find words that you say "oh, yea, this word totally applies to my story"
- you will be writing an ABC Mystery Book Report (1 paragraph for each letter)
- your words & explanations will mention or cover all the literary elements you
   focused on in the Mystery Book Sharing activity
- words for each letter do not have to be in chronological order in story
* will work some in class, but will be due by Friday after next Library Day

     * remember, you planned out last week, how many pages it would take to finish in 8 days
