...for those with 3 or more significant assignments missing or incomplete

IN CLASS SPELLING BEE COMPETITION
TOMORROW/THURSDAY (LIBRARY DAY)
- winning two students in each core spend from now until competition studying words
- do not have to complete vocab packets from now until competition (although they will study words)
I. "REAL GONE" song lyrics by Cheryl Crow
- beginning to look at analyzing Cars, Pixar's 1995 animated feature film
- looking at use of songs to foreshadow themes, character flaws, story narrative, etc.
- Read both the lyrics AND accompanying analytical comments (right side of paper)
- Answer questions in worksheet (what lyrics prove analysis...)
- discuss/share as group and class
II. begin CARS (first few minutes, at least)
- video notes, LA Spiral; goal is to analyze film and write a Character Analysis
- Q: How does the main character change and evolve over the course of the story?
Points to look for in first few minutes
- HOW does a novel or movie "set up" themes, characterization, foils, etc. in opening?
- Notes on major characters we meet at start of film - Lightning, The King, Chick Hicks
* the last two are foils for Lightning -- which one will he be like by end of novel?
- focus on words and descriptions characters give us
- focus on establishing setting and context of opening
- pay attention to actions and words of each of the three characters
- note DREAMS (a theme)
- note HEADLIGHTS (a symbol of wisdom and vision)
- note FEAR/PANIC that drives characters
- note HOOK (the event that sends the story in a particular direction)
* advice on HOW to take notes and somehow keep track of who we are writing about is part of today's lesson
* * * *
HOMEWORK - no vocab or crossword or Atlas assigned today
