11/4/14 - TU [VIKINGS]
I. VIKINGS - prep for mini essay
- where do I find info in my text on Vikings? (review where index is)
- review why glossary would not be best option
- review how writers have to ask and answer questions to complete a text/report
- essay "set up" (review idea that you cannot just jump into essay subject)
- look at last few paragraphs BEFORE Vikings are mentioned
- how does information there, set reader up for section on Vikings?
- review information in previous 3 paragraphs and create Q's (model/discuss)
- students read HA, pages 20-21 (last 2 paragraphs pg. 20, all of pg. 21)
- create questions based on information presented; what questions were answered by text?
"reverse engineering" an essay
II. "VIKINGS" encyclopedia article
- SSR, 2012 World Book Encyclopedia entry on Vikings
- then, after SSR, jot down words/phrases/details you'd use in your mini-essay
- no full sentences
* you should already have some ideas having created questions to answer
III. DARK AGES, chapter 9 (History Channel dvd)
- video notes (and comparing video information to encyclopedia - what repeats?)
- quick key word notes
BY END OF ALL OF THIS, STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE ENOUGH INFORMATION FOR A SUCCINCT, INFORMATIVE, ORGANIZED QUICK WRITE ON-DEMAND ESSAY ON THE VIKINGS.
IV. VIKINGS - on demand essay
- use order of questions from start of class to help structure your essay
- use encyclopedia and video notes on what to expand upon
- looking for clear introduction (set up) and conclusion (end of era/legacy)
V. MIDDLE AGES ABC BOOK LIST ("book report")
- hand out instructions
- examples on back are A+++ examples
- you may define and explain in your own words, books words, or
conduct research online or in other books/resources
- you choose the format that works for you
- art/illustration is NOT required or expected (this is a writing assignment)
- 15 entries = 57% ( D) , 20 entries = 76% ( C ), etc.

__ consider beginning Vocab Sentences on Middle Ages novel (due FRI)
apply new words to the novel you are reading
__ review/look at/START ATLAS page 144 "British Isles" map
10 geographic observation sentences due Friday
detailed, clear sentences, using directional language from instruction sheet (in spiral)
* Make up points may be gained by doing extra sentences about your middle ages novel
geography (will count for both crossword and Atlas assignments)
___ Middle Ages Fiction Novel ABC List due upon return next week (Wed. Nov. 12th)
One word for each letter, defined in detail AND explained
How does word/term fit into the novel or middle ages life?
NOT a one sentence list; mini paragraphs 3-7 sentences.
(Seven sentences would be a "you need to stop writing now" maximum)
* students should be finished with the novel by this Wednesday, 11/5
