I. SPIRALS (language arts spiral first)
* hand out first spirals
- "number" first four pages in Roman numerals
- each side is an individual page
- after Roman Numeral iv, begin with number 1
II. FAMILY TREE PROLOGUE
- Discuss with person across from you your first day of school
- How'd it go? How'd you feel? What were you thinking or expecting?
- Class share (volunteers)
- read SSR the prologue to Katherine Ayre's Family Tree
- share with person across from you thoughts on this person's first day of school
- ANNOTATE prologue (teacher led activity)
- focus on and discuss voice, word choice and implications, setting cues, characterization, etc.
III. FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL QUICK WRITE
- quick brainstorm/pre-writing exercise
- what are at least five things you know you'll mention?
- or quickly web out an organization of some points you want to make
WRITE: 1-2 pages. Don't worry about mistakes. It's a quick write. You can go back and rewrite.
Don't write to end of page. Leave a margin. Don't linger over a word you think might be misspelled.
You may skip lines between paragraphs. Use the prologue as an example if you get stuck.
- Stop. Reread. Circle any words you think might be misspelled. Underline a phrase or sentence you liked, think is funny, sad, powerful, interesting.
- Popcorn read your line or phrase (underlined).
