5/6/13 - MO

* SUB DAY as Mr. Gentile has unfortunately been pummeled
   by whatever gunk has been taking out the seventh graders. 
   One doozy of a cold. (In May, no less!)


I.  Introductions by substitute
- review class rules
- review fire drill process, just in case

II.  VOCABULARY WEEK 19
- prequiz
- self-correct & work on Day 1
* Day 2 is homework for the night

* SENTENCES ARE ON THE NEXT FEW CHAPTERS OF THE GIVER (ch. 2-3)
- focus on using words correctly, showing you understand meaning of word
- which is ironic, considering that's the exact opposite of their purpose in the Giver
* YOU MAY ALSO WRITE SENTENCES ABOUT YOUR NEWS ARTICLE IF YOU CHOOSE

III.  THE GIVER, chpt. 3-4
- review story so far with substitute
- read up to but no further than The Giver Chapter 4
- write GIVER LETTER HOME
- One to two pages long.

Pretend that you are yourself and visiting this "community."
You have all of your memories and feelings and sensibilities
You cannot change the story in any way, but you are there
      for all conversations and events in the story.
Write a letter or report back home to someone about your visit
Write about what you are seeing and observing.
How do you explain these things?  How do you feel about these things?
What are your comments or opinions or comparisons to your own life?
How do you explain why they are doing things the way they do?
(Think about how Lily's mother tried to help Lily understand how another
 community could be different.)
YOUR LETTERS ARE NOT JUST PLOT SUMMARIES


IV.  hand out: "Few plan for long term care..."
- 20 detailed facts on what you understand
- after you've written facts, write summary on upper half of back sheet
- write your opinion on the lower half; your 'so what?' or 'why this matters.'

HOMEWORK -- plan and organize your week; a little each night

__  read "Few plan for long-term care, but many people will need it" (Oregonian, 5/13)
      20 facts or details (things you understand from the article) - DUE FR 5/10
      * complete title; neat, detailed facts, organized writing (typed or written)
      * After you have your facts, write a quick summary on top half of backside of article;
         write your opinion on bottom half of backside of article.
___  complete VOCAB WEEK 19 in a timely manner
        - DAY 1 complete in class MO
        - DAY 2 complete at home MO night 
        - DAY 3 complete at home TU night
        - DAY 4 complete at home WE night  (we'll correct in class on TH)

        * begin SENTENCES once you correct and check answers (each night)
           Try to get a few done early! ! !
        * write sentences with detail and context.  Show that you understand the meaning
           of the word.
        * underline or box the vocabulary word; skip lines between sentences
        * title must include which week of vocabulary (which #) and the topic
