- Complete silently, correct as a class

social studies/reading
II. MOCK COURT - vocubulary intro
- hand out Student Guide to Mock Courts
- skim/scan for unfamiliar words or legal terms/phrases
- create list (this is a prereading strategy and speed reading skill)

- intro to vocab for the week (mock court terms)

- Highlight/box legal terms/phrases in pckt.
- underline key, essential detail/definition words
- color coding is fine (term in orange & definition in yellow, say)

* Read by end of week; show highlighting/boxing strategy
* Be prepared for test of terms & definitions

III. THE GIVER - end of novel
- Why does Lois Lowry create an ambiguous ending?
- How does this fit in with her scheme for the whole point of the novel?
- Write "the next chapter" based on your understanding of Lowry's philosophy
