#9: The pirate is so impressed with his dog Louie because there were a thousand squirrels on the ground at the park and in one frantic hour the dog chased them ALL back into the tress where they belonged. Everyone one of them. Sounds mean to me and it's not what we should be training our dogs to do, but pirates don't think about things with such compassion.
#11: It's summer vacation, which Calvin absolutely loves because he and Hobbes can just hang out under a tree all day doing nothing. (Notice how we were able to add the details based on what we could see in the image)
#13: Calvin and Hobbes are up in their tree house pretending to be bloodthirsty pirates, wearing paper hats and holding pretend swords. (Notice how many details we got into the description by looking at the comic panels?)
#16: Wizard of Id is a comic strip that has been around for decades. Instead of a brave and gallant knight, defending the kingdom, Rodney is cowardly, clumsy, and fearful. He will do anything to avoid danger. When the little boy says that his mother has told him he needs to take his vitamins or he'll wind up like Rodney, the boys' mother is basically her son will be weak and cowardly if he doesn't eat right. If the boy's mother talks about Rodney "all the time" it suggests that his reputation is well known. Shorter Answer: The little boy's mother convinces him to take his vitamins by telling him he'll be weak and cowardly like Sir Rodney if he doesn't!
#17: A running gag throughout the strip is that there is always someone who calls the king a creep or a fink. In the Middle Ages this might have resulted in death or torture. At first the voice is unknown and unseen, calling out that "The king is a dirty, rotten creep." Pretty critical and insulting words.
#18: With his spear bravely pointed towards the unseen person, Rodney calls out the person for insulting the king. He bravely and fiercely challenges the speaker to show his face and repeat his words. He has a pretty mad, angry look to his face.
#19: We already know that Rodney is considered cowardly when the little boy's mother always talks poorly about Rodney the knight and how her son needs to take his vitamins (to be strong) or he'll wind up weak and cowardly like Rodney (it's implied). A true knight never backs down from danger or let's someone insult his lord, but when this giant of a man emerges from the forest, Rodney starts shaking and is polite and "welcoming" to the giant looking man in the horned helmet. He's totally afraid.
