CASTLE PROJECT RUBRIC

-->
CASTLE SCORE RUBRIC  (and checklist)

You may not wind up having all of these parts, BUT they are all worth points.
You can miss a few parts and still score an A.

Score the following elements of your castle based on a scale of 0-5:
0 (F)  = Not there/non-existent;
1 (D)  = Very sloppy, but sort of recognizable, although lacking detail or clarity.
2 (C)  = Recognizable, but could use a great deal of revision and detail;
3 (B)   = Recognizable, some detail.  Not quite an A, but definitely better than a C;
4 (A)   = Neat, detailed, recognizable parts.  Some creativity or mastery apparent.
5 (A+) = Outstanding, above and beyond, creative and original, highly detailed.
            Has a “wow” factor.
            A 4 is still an “A,” but a 5 indicates a stunning mastery.
        ***   If you are unable to tell what a building is, you can guess.   Obviously, it will not be worth a full 5 points.

       ** ALL BELOW ARE WORTH FIVE (5) POINTS UNLESS OTHERWISE INDICATED

__   OUTER CURTAIN with watch towers (up to 5 points, based on neatness, authenticity, including brick/slits detail)
         (an inner curtain – 2nd wall - counts as EXTRA points)

___  CRENNELATIONS* & MERLONS*  (the “teeth”) on top of castle walls/parapets  (5 points)
                 Tops of walls are called “battlements” if they have these defensive features
                 No points if you just have a straight edge and not “teeth” that are characteristic of a castle

___   FINIALS, slender pieces of stone or wood on tops of merlons  (2-3 points, depending on how many &
          creativity)   can be shaped like spikes, fins, animal shapes, globes, or anything, really

___   TURRETS or GUARD TOWERS at some or each corner  (5 points total)
          towers rise up from the ground, while turrets stick out from the wall at the top of the parapet

___    PARAPET WALKWAY– knee or waist-high wall around top of castle walls   (3 points)
           basically, if you have a wall and there are crenels & merlons, we assume you have a parapet
           full points only if you have the actual walkway, however

___  CORBELS  (stone or wood that acts as a bracket/support piece on a wall)
___  MACHIOLATIONS  (openings or series of openings at base of parapets or towers)
___   main GATEHOUSE/BARBICAN (w/ 2 towers – score based on detail and authenticity – 10 points)
___   PORTUCULLIS   (the metal or wooden slat “door” into a barbican, at end of drawbridge – 5 points)
___   DRAWBRIDGE (count as extra points ONLY if separate from portcullis- 5 points)
___   The KEEP -- Great Hall/Donjon (5 points, based on authenticity, design, details added)
___   WIDER WINDOWS in upper rooms of Great Hall/Donjon (5 points, depending on neatness, obviousness)
___   Narrow ARROW SLIT WINDOWS  (5 points, depending on appropriate placement and numbers)
___   WELL/water source (5 points, depending on creativity & detail)

___   CHAPEL –even if you can only see the symbol of where it would be
such as stained glass windows or
        a decorative cross (remember, it is a religious chamber, therefore must stand out as such)
___    BARRACKS/garrison (for soldiers)
___  KENNELS for dogs (think about how different structures are designed for different purposes)
___   KITCHEN (for Great Hall)
___  CISTERN to catch fresh water
___   POSTERN (rear) wall gate
___   GARDEROBE, tower lou, bathroom
___   STABLES (often below the barracks to save space in within the bailey )
___   SMITHY  (farrier or blacksmith hut/building – would not be enclosed; and WHERE would it go?)
___   DOVECOTE (pigeon’s shed or tower – is it placed in a place that seems appropriate?)
___   MEWS or falconry house (a place for falcons or hawks -- hunting birds for leisure)
___   OUTER CURTAIN with watch towers (a second set of walls- counts as EXTRA points)
___   solid/firm BASE, possibly /w colors or markings to indicate ground, crop lands, town buildings, etc.
___    OUTSIDE CASTLE DETAILS (variety and depth of items/drawings – plants, ponds, gardens, roads, etc.)
___   GUTTER DETAILS such as gargoyles or creative rain-catching features (up to 5 points overall)
___   other INNER WARD/BAILEY details drawn or included such as gardens, ovens, etc. (up to 5 points)

       THE FOLLOWING WILL ALSO BE PART OF YOUR GRADE:
        10-point Scale for all items below (9-10=A/8=B/7=C/4-6=D/0-3=F)

__    BANNER or pennant flag (some clear identification of student name, decorated, colorful, symbolic)
__    overall NEATNESS (on a scale of 1-10, from lowest to highest)
__    overall ORGANIZATION (structures in proper or appropriate places; designs appropriate)
__    STABILITY / STRUCTURAL SOUNDNESS  (on a scale of 1-10, how well does it all hold together?)
__    overall CREATIVITY (Creative embellishment and attention to detail and style)

GRADING:  There is a potential for up to 200 points or slightly more if ALL of the above are taken into consideration.  However,  your grade is based on a 150-point scale, which means you can still score an A if you do not include absolutely everything and even possibly forget an item or two.  Also, your score is based on an A being 4 points, not 5.  The  fifth point is like extra credit that is awarded for fantastic detail and creativity and not awarded lightly.  So students benefit for each item they put the extra time and energy in order to achieve greater creativity and detail.  Bottom line:  there is room for extra creativity and time IF you wish to apply yourself and earn more than 150 points.

ANY STORE BOUGHT SHAPES OR CASTLE PARTS RECEIVE NO SCORE, A ZERO.
