4/5 [WE], 2017 -- OUTSIDERS day 1

 ** VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP 
      SELL PIZZA AND DRINKS AT SCIENCE FAIR!
      Need about 5-7 students at a time
      5:30/5:45 - 8:00  (you can break it up into hour-long shifts; earliest will be busiest)
      * only a few kids needed at 5 to help put up posters and flyers around school
      Must be responsible, good with people, able to make change if necessary
     

I.  INTRODUCTION TO S.E. HINTON'S THE OUTSIDERS
- review the title and the cover
- make observations about the cover illustration and start to determine
   characters, setting, story (make predictions)
- be VERY specific, like a police detective; WHAT do you see, exactly?
- review backpage blurb (continue to make predictions/refine predictions)
- also, at the end of this activity, look at the title and the author's name
- how are they "designed?" -- text, size, placement on cover, color of text
   (in both cases, each cover accurately reflects the story)

II.  WHAT IS AN "OUTSIDER?"
- what does the title mean or possibly mean?  what could it mean?
- obviously, it's important enough a concept to be the title of the book, but why?
- WHO is an outsider?  how?

- one page QW.
  first begin by defining what you think an "outsider" is
  how someone or something becomes an outsider
  examples of people or types of people you think are or could be outsiders
  FINALLY, at end (when prompted by teacher), explain who or what the Outsiders in the book are

III.  OUTSIDERS CH 1
- if you could be played by any actor who would it be and why?
- or, who is your favorite actor and why?

- begin to read chptr 1 (up to page 18)
- answer underlined questions in spiral (bRACE format)
* questions and bRACE format handed out in class
- we will also model #1 bRACE format and take time to just discuss Q's in class

        final copy will be handwritten or typed, on paper glued onto colored paper
        * we've done this style of work in class before

        "flip" tape CH 1 Q's into LA Spiral
         tape of glue bRACE sheet into inside front cover
