4/20 [TH], 2017 - CRUSADES essay

I.  CHECK IN (tracker/homework)
- fill out tracker (like every day)
- plan out homework (like every day)

II.  HENRY IV VOCAB
- example of two words
- copy as a class
- include explanations ON PAPER meaning of image
- include connections to story (explained)
- guess vocab words
* VOCABULARY # 2 due MONDAY
* packets will be collected after Vocab #3 turned in

III.  CRUSADES ESSAY - prewrite
- review HA text (titles, subtitles, organization of chapter)
  what and where does the text talk about certain topics?
   helps to provide a sense of organization
- review Introduction and Summary of chapter
   focus on main ideas/points; the "so what" comments

IV. CRUSADES ESSAY - prewrite WORD LIST
 A.  review notes; circle words that you think are significant and
        would be used in an essay; includes numbers & dates
B.    create a word list of terms you would use in your 1-2 page essay
       using notes (and text, if needed)
        - two-word phrases at most; no full sentences
         - you would turn these words into sentences
          * don't worry about order,although as you write, put them onto the page 
          in the section where you think the word would appear
          (top/beginning, middle, or bottom/end)
C.   share word lists at table groups to see similarities and differences
       get ideas for anything you missed
D.   review essential questions page from start of unit
       circle or star essential questions your essay HAS to answer
       go back to your list and see if you've covered these questions
       * never say what you don't know; always focus on what you do know

V. CRUSADES ESSAY - rough draft quick write
- one-to-two pages; one page minimum; two pages max
* if you get to the 2nd page and are almost done, you have to be selective
   choose what NOT to write/include; last lines for the "so what" or conclusion

VI.  CRUSADE ESSAY - first revision steps
A.       Find Jolting Sentences
        - reread in your head and "hear" how it sounds
        - if a sentence seems hard to read smoothly indicate in margins "rewrite 
B.   FIND WORDS TO SUSPECT OF MISSPELLINGS
        - as you read (or go back and read one more time), look for words that could be misspelled
        - write "SP?" and circle this note to indicate it needs to be checked; just to be sure
C.    ADD ADJECTIVES and ADVERBS where needed for impact
        - find sentences where adding adjectives or adverbs will strengthen the image or point you are
           trying to make 
D.    read to see if there are any words that seem generic, boring, not strong enough
        write "REPLACE" to indicate need for stronger term
E.    find words or concepts to DEFINE OR EXPLAIN (flesh out your writing)
        indicate to the side in the margins "define/explain"
        this can be for people, too
