3/9 [TH], 2017 - KEYSTONE OP ED

I.  KEYSTONE OP-ED (from USA Today, 11/18/14)

     "Keystone's just another oil pipeline.  Get it built already." (pro)
      "A project with no redeeming value" (con)

A.     - discuss what you know about the Keystone Pipeline
         - guess if you know nothing (pre-reading activity)

B.      LOOK FOR DIFFICULT WORDS OR TERMS
          - quickly scan articles for difficult or unfamiliar words
           - indicate by lightly circling word and adding a question mark
            * also winds up being a sort of pre-reading activity by doing so

C.       BACKGROUND INFORMATION notes
            - teacher provided (model note design); all notes FROM articles
             - set up pages 2 & 3 for Pro/Con sentences or phrases
            * reading Pro article first CAN influence your view
            * taking notes on Con/negative article first CAN ALSO influence your view
            * be aware of how writing or reading order can also be used to influence readers

D.       READ ARTICLES
           - as you read, take note of words that you do not know or understand
           - lightly circle them and draw a line to the margin
              from the word with a circled  question mark indicating something to look up
           - write questions in margins or circle and question mark sentences you do not understand
           - underline all positive or negative words/phrases/sentences that are PRO or CON
              write and circle a minus sign (negative/against) for CON words/sentences
              write and circle a plus sign (positive/for) PRO words/sentences
              to the left or right

E.        WRITE PRO/CON STATEMENTS from articles
            - silently first, then in groups
            - what are words or sentences each author uses to convince you to believe their position?
            * copy teacher modelled statements put up on overhead

___   Read to finish past book (YA African American Character books) -- past due
         * final five plot events list STILL DUE/now PAST DUE

___   Read 20-30 minutes CURRENT YA FICTION NOVEL (IF finished with past novel)
         checked out on Tuesday/finish in 2 weeks, unless you talk with teacher
         * be prepared for in class check ins 

___   Check blog for KEYSTONE OP ED VOCABULARY definitions & words (due MO)
         - we'll have some time in class on Friday to finish up; use class time well!
        - entire packet of today's work will be due on Monday w/ Vocab
