I. SYRIA'S REFUGEES (political cartoon)
A. - what do we see literally in this image? (class activity/teacher led)
- focus on strong language/nouns & verbs
(for instance: what causes waves like that? what do walls do? -- literal interpretations)
B. - how does the artist tell you who or what the characters are? (words/titles on men and water)
- how do we know who they are (look at condition of water, clothes the men are wearing)
- what is the emotional state of these men? how can you tell (facial and body language, sweat
beads)
C. - now consider the representational/symbolism of the images
- what could the images imply, suggest, tell a viewer
(for instance, floods can overwhelm land and people; so can the needs of the refugees)
D. - write down notes on the back anything in the op-ed article that relates to the Syrian refugee
crisis after answering in groups the questions being answered
(we've actually answered them all as a class)
* this political cartoon ties in to the op ed article everyone is reading at home and should help it make a bit more sense.
