10/25 [TU], CHARLEMAGNE ESSAY

IF YOU ARE ABSENT YOU WILL HAVE TO DO THESE ACTIVITIES AT HOME
or
YOU MAY SCHEDULE TIME TO COME IN AND WORK DURING LUNCH OR
AFTER SCHOOL
* please note, today was a 2-hour writing process day

     PREWRITING strategies

I.  quick write CHARLEMAGNE ESSAY
* 1page minimum, 2 pages maximum; in SS Spiral

- review questions on Charlemagne from our first day discussing him
- review notes quietly (helps you determine/remember) where information is written
- discuss questions in groups/ try to answer questions based on our notes

- review all notes and circle at least 20-40 words you know you'd have to use
  when writing an essay on Charlemagne.  This includes dates.
* this virtually guarantees strong word choice and helps prevent plagiarism

- on a separate sheet of paper, create a word list that you will use in your essay
- place words where you think they will appear in your essay
  top of page/first 1/3rd of essay, middle of page / middle of essay, etc.

II.  write CHARLEMAGNE ESSAY
* in SS Spiral, 1-2 pages
* rough draft only

* follow pattern of words you created in your word list (organizational tool)
* even if you were to put those words into sentences,
   it would still be a strong, word-specific start to an essay

III.  proof CHARLEMAGNE ESSAY
- reread; sound it out in your head;
- how do the sentences "sound"?  If they sound wrong, make notes to change
- be suspicious of misspelled words; lightly circle and write SP? to check later

IV.  ESSAY READ AROUND
-  we'll be trading back and forth everyone's essays
- do not criticize;
- take note of introduction and conclusion first thing, THEN go back to start & read
- make notes on missing items that would help strength
