2/18/15 - WE [OUTSIDERS]

** LATE OPEN TODAY
** BOWLING PERMISSION SLIPS DUE TODAY

I.  NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY poem
- read poem quietly, then outloud with teacher
- look at words and phrases and begin to ask questions that would help make the poem make sense
(i.e.  What is gold?  What kind of gold?  Why only gold?  Where does the gold go? etc.)
- asking questions helps to focus on the ideas and purpose of a poem
- discuss in groups/brainstorm questions
- share as a class
- teacher will collect so that we can work on the poem later in the book, when the meaning takes shape

* this poem is THE heart of the Outsiders.  It was not written for the book, so how does the meaning change as used by the author?  What is happening in the story at this point?  How is Johnny changing as a character?  Why is Ponyboy, our incredibly articulate narrator unable to figure out the meaning of the poem at this point?

II.  OUTSIDERS CHAPTER 5
- review questions (in groups) for Chapter 4 to get us back into the story
- take up reading where we left off; read until the end of chapter 5, if you can
* we'll continue reading on Thursday (sub day, as Mr. Gentile will be at a workshop)
