11/19/14 - WE


     current events
I.  INTERPRETING/READING POLITICAL CARTOONS
- take a moment to look at the one-panel "cartoons"
- what's going on?  What characters do you see?  What words are visible?
- share in groups, then as a class
- review definition of political cartoon
- walk through symbolism, setting with teacher
- take notes to the right of each image
- what is the cartoonist suggesting you believe or think?
- what is the current event being referenced?
- how does the cartoonist create a message?

- walk through next two examples with teacher
- use "academic" language -- cartoonist, suggest, implies, etc.

- work in groups on two top images back of page
- teacher review

- score based on individual student work on last image or two

II.  read PRO-CON OPINION/EDITORIAL ARTICLES
 * this is primarily an intensive introduction
- read pro and con editorials on the Keystone Pipeline issue
- jot down facts you glean (pick up/learn/grasp) from each piece
- what do you KNOW/LEARN from reading?

- go through and color code article
- one color for PRO (for, in support ) and CON (against)
- color code reasons to build the pipeline
   and color code (different color) reasons NOT to build the pipeline

          * (finish by no later than Friday to be on track)

___    continue (4-6) VOCAB WORDS FROM FIRST MCBROOM TALL TALE
          (due FRIDAY) - next week's vocabulary will be from 2nd story

          Include:
___   WORD (boxed)
___   word part (in parenthesis)
___   definition (as thorough as possible -- do not use word IN the definition)
___   sentence in quotation marks FROM the story (with page number in parentheses)

* should lead to stronger word choice and writing style for your own Tall Tale
