I. SHORT STORY INTRODUCTION
- elements of a short story (discussion)
- Beginning * Middle * End
- setting, main characters, problem/conflict, tone/mood, peak, resolution
- ideas about what makes a short story
II. GALLERY WALK
- view five different images and predict HOW they fit into a short story
- who are the people/person or what is the setting?
- what do you see? what do you observe?
- write questions, comments, or predictions/guesses on poster paper
III. HARRIS BURDICK MYSTERY PICTURE
- view picture with all images together as they appear in the original picture
- title of the picture is "The Seven Chairs"
- subtitle is: "The fifth chair wound up in Paris"
- begin to brainstorm possible scenarios
* This is a school-wide writing activity, with each class using a different picture from Chris Van Allsburg's The Mysteries of Harris Burdick.
IV. WRITE ROUGH DRAFT
- quickly brainstorm or web out a few idea
- begin writing (35-45 minutes)
