WINTER BREAK BOOK REPORT and MAKE UP WORK
REQUIRED:
REQUIRED ASSIGNMENT #1
___ READ your Classics
Illustrated Novel
by the end of break (you have time!)
complete
BOOK TALK
BOOK TALK OPTIONS: (your choice)
with parent/adult relative discuss using scoring rubric
write paragraph answers on
separate sheet of lined paper
(you may also type).
Again, READING THIS BOOK IS ONE OF TWO REQUIRED ASSIGNMENTS FOR THE WINTER
BREAK.
*** DOWNLOAD THE ACTUAL CLASSIC BOOK if
you have a device such as a
Kindle, Fire, iPad, or iPod. More credit
for these books. If you are a high end reader, the expectation
is that you will choose this option, instead of the illustrated classic
book. And, to be honest, I think you’ll
enjoy the actual, full text.
REQUIRED ASSIGNMENT #2
Using front page sections of the
Oregonian or any of the many free newspapers around town, find and clip out 50-70 words that you can relate to or connect to
your Classics Illustrated novel. Cut out words or phrases from
headlines and from the body text of articles.
You may cut out some words from ads in the front page section, but no
more than 20 or so. NO IMAGES. Just words or phrases. Or, letters, if you want a particular letter,
for your collage. This can be a basic
glue job or you can work to make a creatively designed piece of word art.
NO WORDS FROM ENTERTAINMENT
SECTION. NO MORE THAN 1/3 OF YOUR WORDS FROM SPORTS SECTION (since I know some
of you will chomp at the bit to read the Sports Section). Focus on the World, National, Regional,
International front page sections. You
may do a second word collage of words just from the Sports Section as extra
credit. Also, NO INTERNET PRINT OUTS
(this would cause a huge waste of paper.)
Create a word collage on an 8.5x11 piece of paper. Leave a margin of about half an inch or so
around the edges. You can randomly place
the words around the page OR you can try to be more creative and string
together phrases or quotes from the novel.
Except for the margins at the edge of the paper, your collage should
cover everything. No white spaces in the
collage itself.
RESOURCES:
The Portland Tribune is a
free newspaper, but mostly about local and regional news. You can sometimes find The Oregonian
in the bins at coffeeshops (maybe your neighbors, if you don’t
subscribe?). You may also find many FREE
multicultural newspapers around many stores and street corners, such as the Skanner,
El Hispanic News, and The Asian Report.
