I.  ISLAM ANTICIPATION GUIDE
- Islam impacts our lives every day, yet we understand very little of what Islam is
- Islam appeared in the late 500's and had a profound impact on European MA
- The Byzantines would actually wind  up buffering Europe from Islamic domination
- The Franks held Islam to Spain, which would be Islamic for 800 years
SO, THEN, WHAT IS ISLAM?
* focus on key words to guess; graded on participation not right answers
* use OTHER questions to help figure out possible answers elsewhere (reading strategy)
- discuss as a class/share what we THINK we know

II.  HISTORY ALIVE CHPT 7: GEOGRAPHY OF ISLAM
- we don't have time to read the entire unit and will focus on last two chapters.
- However, we should have an idea of what first two chapters are about

- skimming and scanning for information practice (how to select important information quickly)
- preview History Alive Unit 2 table of contents (pg. 71) - what do we learn?
- Scan 7.2-7.6 for quick facts -- fill out CORNELL NOTES (share later in groups)
- title is title of the chapter: Geography of the Arabian Peninsula
*scan titles, then glance at the first sentence of several paragraphs for main ideas.
* glance at last paragraph of a section for something that seems significant

 III.  HA CHPT 7: INTRODUCTION
- read Introduction, 7.1
- teacher-led Cornell Notes (with Think Aloud - connections and design of notes)
- Include the "So What" or summary
