3/19/13 - TU

> > >  LATE OPENING WEDNESDAY
> > >  FREE half-hour recess, also (likely inside)

seeing good writing in persuasive pieces
I.  TRACKER/HOMEWORK CHECK IN
- take out all materials you might need for core and set on top of your binder
- review tracker; begin to plan some homework you know you'll have
- start homework while others catching up

* SENTENCES ARE ON WHATEVER YOU LIKE (open topic)
- focus on using words correctly, showing you understand meaning of word

II.  Current Events:  IRAQ WAR 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY
- go to back pages of SS spiral (we'll keep CE stuff there)
- on a left hand page, brainstorm everything you know about the Iraq War
title:  "Things I Think I Know About The Iraq War"

- read two opinion pieces from USA TODAY (usatoday.com)

- Iraq war WAS worth the cost versus Iraq war was NOT worth cost
- read and lightly circle words you are unfamiliar with
- on the right side of your spiral, now write down all facts you can find in both pieces
write in list form all facts from both opinion articles

- choose a color to highlight color (the POSITION of the column)
- reread piece and use position color for all words or phrases that support
the position stated in the title
* for instance, green for all words that support the idea that it was NOT worth
the cost to remove Saddam Hussein and invade Iraq

- choose a color to highlight all words or phrases that refute/reject this position
words that suggest it WAS worth it to remove Saddam Hussein

* you should notice how much color each piece requires will shift depending on the position
the author has taken.
